Family Visa Types

The different types of Family Visas are known by different ‘subclasses’.
Each subclass has its own set of criteria that must be satisfied in order for it to be granted.

This family visa allows older parents to live in Australia for up to two years if they are the parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.

If you are granted this family visa, you will have two years from the date you are granted the visa to apply for a permanent Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864). This visa cannot be extended or renewed.

Eligibility:

  • Must be sponsored by an eligible child.
  • Must be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia.
  • Must meet the balance-of-family test.
  • Must have an assurance of support.
  • Must meet health and character requirements.

Benefits:

  • Stay in Australia for 2 years.
  • Work, study, and enroll in Medicare.
  • Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid.

This family visa lets older parents live permanently in Australia if they have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.

Eligibility:

  • Must be sponsored by an eligible child.
  • Must be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia.
  • Must meet the balance-of-family test.
  • Must have an assurance of support.
  • Must meet health and character requirements.

Benefits:

This family visa lets parents live in Australia for up to two years if they have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Processing time for this type of family visas varies between 5-12 months depending on the assessment level and individual cases.

  1. 1. Adoption Visa (Subclass 102)

 

This visa allows children adopted outside Australia to live in Australia with their adoptive parents.

Eligibility:

  • The child must have been under 18 years of age when adopted, when they apply, and when a decision is made.
  • Be outside Australia when the application is submitted.
  • Be adopted or in the process of being adopted by their sponsor parent.

Benefits:

  • Migrate to Australia as a permanent resident to live with their adoptive parent.
  • Study and access Medicare.
  • Apply for Australian citizenship if eligible.

This visa allows a single older person, who relies on a relative living in Australia for financial support, to move to Australia permanently.

Eligibility:

  • Be outside Australia when applying and when the decision is made.
  • Be sponsored by the relative or relative’s partner.

Benefits:

  • Stay in Australia as a permanent resident.
  • Sponsor eligible relatives to come to Australia.
  • Apply for Australian citizenship if eligible.

This visa allows a single older person to stay in Australia if they rely on a relative living in Australia for financial support.

Eligibility:

  • Be inside Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when applying and when the decision is made.
  • Be sponsored by the relative or relative’s partner.

Benefits:

This family visa allows older parents to move to Australia if more of their children live in Australia than any other country.

Eligibility:

  • Must be sponsored by an eligible child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • Must meet the age requirement.
  • Must meet the balance-of-family test.

Benefits:

This visa allows you to live permanently in Australia to take care of someone with a long-term illness who can’t find suitable care in Australia.

Eligibility:

  • Must be in Australia when you apply and when the visa is decided.
  • Must be sponsored by a relative or their partner.
  • The person you care for must have a long-term medical condition and no reasonable access to care options in Australia.

Benefits:

  • Stay in Australia as a permanent resident
  • Work and study in Australia
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years

This permanent visa allows you to relocate to Australia to care for someone with a long-term medical condition who lacks suitable care options in the country.

Eligibility:

  • Must be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is decided.
  • Must be sponsored by a relative or their partner.
  • The person you care for must have a long-term medical condition and no reasonable access to care options in Australia.

Benefits:

  • Move to or stay in Australia as a permanent resident
  • Work and study in Australia
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years

This visa allows a child living outside Australia to move to the country to live with their parents

Eligibility:

  • Must be a dependent child of a parent who is an Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen, or holder of an Australian permanent visa.
  • Must be under 18 years, a full-time student aged over 18 and under 25, or over 18 and unable to work due to a disability.
  • Must be single and dependent on the parent.
  • Must be outside Australia when the application is made.

With this visa, the child can:

This visa lets a child live permanently in Australia with their parents.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a dependent child of a parent who is an Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen, or holder of an Australian permanent visa.
  • Must be under 18 years, a full-time student aged over 18 and under 25, or over 18 and unable to work due to a disability.
  • Must be single and dependent on the parent.
  • Must be in Australia when the application is made and when the decision is made.

Benefits:

This visa allows a child to stay in Australia temporarily while the permanent Partner visa application of their parent is being processed.

Eligibility:

  • Must be sponsored by their parent or their parent’s partner.
  • Must be single.
  • Must be younger than 18 years, or:
    • A full-time student aged 18 or 19 years, or
    • Aged 18 or older and unable to work due to a disability.

Benefits:

  • Move to or stay in Australia until the parent’s permanent partner visa application is decided.
  • Travel to and from Australia.
  • Work and study in Australia.

This visa is for a person who is not a New Zealand citizen but is a member of a family unit of a New Zealand citizen. It lets you live and work in Australia for five years.

Eligibility:

  • Must not be a New Zealand citizen at the time of application.
  • Must meet certain eligibility criteria.

Benefits:

  • Live, work, and study in Australia for 5 years from the date your visa is granted.
  • Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want during the 5-year period.

This visa lets a child who is single come to Australia to live with a relative if their parents are deceased, can’t care for them, or can’t be found.

Eligibility:

  • Must be under 18 years of age, single, and with no parent to care for them.
  • Must have a relative who is a settled Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent resident.
  • Must be outside Australia when the application is made and when a decision is made.

Benefits:

This visa lets a child who is single and already in Australia stay with a relative if their parents are deceased, can’t care for them, or can’t be found.

Eligibility:

  • Must be under 18 years of age, single, and with no parent to care for them.
  • Must have a relative who is a settled Australian citizen, eligible New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent resident.
  • Must be in Australia but not in immigration clearance when the application is made and when a decision is made.

Benefits:

This permanent visa lets parents live in Australia if their child is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.

Eligibility:

  • Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible.
  • Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence.
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years.

This permanent visa lets people move to Australia to be with their only close family members.

Eligibility:

  • Must be outside Australia when applying and when the decision is made.
  • Must be a remaining relative of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • Must have an eligible sponsor.

Benefits:

  • Stay in Australia as a permanent resident.
  • Work and study in Australia.
  • Enroll in Australia’s public healthcare scheme, Medicare.

This permanent visa lets people stay in Australia to be with their only close family members.

Eligibility:

  • Must be in Australia when applying and when the decision is made.
  • Must be a remaining relative of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • Must have an eligible sponsor.

Benefits:

  • Stay in Australia as a permanent resident.
  • Work and study in Australia.
  • Enroll in Australia’s public healthcare scheme, Medicare.

This temporary visa lets a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years.

Eligibility:

  • Must have an approved Parent Sponsor before lodging an application.
  • Apply online for this visa.
  • Lodge the visa application within 6 months of the sponsorship approval or 60 days if given Permission to Apply in Australia.

Benefits:

  • Visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years per visa.
  • Apply for further visas to visit up to a maximum period in Australia of 10 years.
  • Cannot work in Australia.
